Hydrosols vs Floral Water 🌱

What is Hydrosols?

Hydrosols, also known sometimes as floral waters, herbal distillates, hydrolytes, herbal waters, and essential waters, are aqueous products of hydro-distillation. They are water-soluble components of essential oils obtained by steam distillation or hydro-distillation from plants and herbs.

Hydrosols vs Floral Waters.

What is the Difference?

It is important not to confuse true hydrosols with floral waters, although hydrosols are also sometimes referred to as floral waters. Let’s have a look at what exactly sets the two apart on how they are not the same.

Hydrosols are obtained from the distilling of flowers, fruits, fresh leaves, bark roots or wood.  There are two end products from this process. Essential oils, which is the oil-soluble part of the plant and the Hydrosols which is the water-soluble part of the plant which contains microscopic drops of essential oil.

Now lets look at floral waters. These are created by mixing water with either essential oils or synthetic fragrance. So, although they may smell amazing, they do not contain the hydrophilic plant components and all the benefits which they bring.

Hydrosols, on the other hand, have similar properties to essential oils, but are much less concentrated. The fact is that hydrosols have a benefit that essential oils don’t, it comes from the water soluble contents in the plant material that are not present in the essential oil. Just as each essential oil has its unique chemical compound, so does every hydrosol.

So what can I use Hydrosols for?  Hydrosols are amazing facial toners. They are already diluted, and you can pretty much safely spray on your skin and hair all day long.
